Sustainable Energy Projects in Lithuania for Promoting Regional Development
Dainora Grundey
ABSTRACT. The paper analyses the possibilities to use EU structural funds for sustainable energy development projects in Lithuania. Lithuanian Common programming document for 2004-2006 establishes the main priorities, operational programmes and aims of structural funds use in Lithuania. The Lithuanian Single Programming Document (SPD) is being implemented by specific strategies described in five Operational Programmes. Sustainable energy projects can be implemented using the schemes from three main operational programmes: 1) infrastructure; 2) productive sectors; 3) rural development.
The article aims at demonstrating the paramount importance of sustainable energy projects for the regional development in Lithuania as they ensure environmental safety and efficient usage of energy resources. The proposals, presented in this article, for applying to the EU structural funds will assist in developing sustainable energy projects in the regions of Lithuania and redirect urban development towards sustainability.
