The Impact of Resort Casino Development on National Economy: The Case of Slovenia
Hugo Zagorsek
ABSTRACT. The paper examines the relationship between casino industry and economic development by focusing on the case study of proposed integrated resort-style casino in EU member state Slovenia. It demonstrates the usage of economic impact analysis, a methodological approach based on the national input-output tables to evaluate total net benefits of a proposed casino development. It also considers the substitution effects from cannibalization of existing gambling industry. In addition, it provides an empirical overview of the gambling sector in Slovenia and serves as a case study for other localities considering deregulation and expansion of their gambling services. The main finding of the article is that integrated resort casino may substantially increase the size of tourism sector in Slovenia and contribute significantly to the GDP.
