Kamer-Ainur Aivaz, Diane-Paula Corina Vancea
ABSTRACT. The aim of the paper is to introduce an application of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) for benchmarking the efficiency of tourism service production by measuring a producer’s efficiency in relation to a homogenous group of other producers he belongs to, starting from the estimation of the production frontier in relation to which we calculate the efficiency and productivity of each producer. The research is based on the accounting information supplied by 572 tourism firms in Constanta County, Romania, from the “balance sheet” and the "nominal account".
For the analysis, we have taken into consideration the following inputs: the fixed assets, the current assets, the number of employees, as regards the outputs we have chosen the turnover and the profit. The information contained herein can be used to make strategies for increasing efficiency in the two directions: the decrease of the inputs and increase of the output respectively.
KEYWORDS: frontier, efficiency, envelope, input, output, Romania.
