Immigrants’ Access to Education in the EU and the US: A Comparative Perspective

ABSTRACT. The main objective of this article is to identify the barriers faced by immigrants in their new countries, regarding their access to social services, such as education. First of all, the paper clarifies a few concepts related to the immigration phenomenon and establishes some coordinates regarding the immigration process, its impact on the budgetary policy and education financing, specific aspects for the immigration process in the United States and the European Union. The main part is focused on the analysis of the immigrants’ real access to social services as the education, being underlined the specific obstacles faced by the immigrants, the possible solutions, the difficulties, but also the important advances made in the recent decades in both regions.
