REGIONAL INCOME DISPARITIES IN POLAND: ANALYSIS OF THE IMPACT OF SECOND NATURE GEOGRAPHY VARIABLES
Jesus Lopez-Rodriguez
ABSTRACT. This paper uses the framework of Geographical Economics to analyse the regional disparities in Poland over the period 2004-2008. The equation that was estimated is based on the Geographical Economics nominal wage equation, which in its baseline approach consists of regressing nominal wages against markets accessibility (market access). The regression results show that the regional disparities across Polish regions are quite influenced by the market accessibility and that the core-periphery patterns observed in the spatial distribution of income in Poland have been reinforced over the time. The results of the baseline estimation are robust to the alternative specifications, which control the potential market access endogeneity and problems linked to the spatially correlated but intertemporally uncorrelated omitted variables .
