Crisis Management in Transforming Companies – the Case of Poland

ABSTRACT. The article presents the results of the research project, designed to establish the causes and origin of crises in Polish companies in the period 2000 – 2002. The main goal of the project was to examine and describe the current economic condition of companies, ten years after the transformation of the economic system in Poland. The research focused on the following fields or research tasks:
- to determine the main differences between Polish, American and West European crisis in organisations and methods of crisis management;
- to identify macroeconomic crisis-causing factors in the Polish economy during the period 2000 – 2002;
- to establish sectorial factors leading to a crisis;
- to diagnose internal factors in crisis development;
- to analyse the susceptibility to crisis with respect to the industry, the company’s size and age, etc.;
- to describe the main symptoms of a company’s crisis;
- to evaluate the effectiveness of crisis management in the surveyed Polish organisations.
