INVESTIGATING TRANSLATION QUALITY SELF-EVALUATION COMPETENCE WITH CUE-BASED RETROSPECTIVE VERBAL PROTOCOLS5
Yaya Zheng
ABSTRACT: The cue-based retrospective verbal protocols elicited from expert translators in this research are analyzed not only to shed some lights on translation quality self-evaluation competence but also to gain knowledge into translation quality management. These evaluative acts should follow the evaluative standards in quality management. The data drawn from the analysis confirms that translation quality self-evaluation takes place throughout the translation process providing future TPR researchers with a legitimate argument for reorienting their research focus to this new field. The data also reveals some characteristics of the contents evaluated. In order to meet clients’ requirements, different criteria and means are employed. In particular, the study of the means of evaluation has led to a preliminary formulation of the translation quality self-evaluation competence model.
